In principle, winnings from participating in games of chance or betting are tax-free. You therefore do not have to pay taxes on the sum you win.
However, this is different if you participate in games of chance professionally, e.g. as a professional poker player. In such cases, the amount won must be regarded as professional income, which must be duly reported to the FPS Finance.
The Gaming Commission (GC) is not competent for the taxation of games of chance. This falls within the competence of the regions:
- Flemish Region
- Walloon Region
- Brussels-Capital Region (collection and recovery still done by the FPS Finance)
